Hello, hope you had a smooth week. Links continue to be a little lighter.
Hope you have a great Easter or Passover!
Links
New York mag did a big package on the rise and not-quite-fall of the Ukrainian neighborhood on the Lower East Side, which features an entire (great!) as-told-to from the owner of the Meat Market, pictured above.
The main piece on the history of the neighborhood is also great (and has some great photos). Both of these links are great for like “if you love very specific anecdotes about times gone by in America,” and I do. Also therein, a great vibe described:
“The Orchidia had been an entirely Italian place, its neon in the window advertising SEAFOOD and PIZZA, until 1957, when an employee named Maria Pidhorodecky bought the business from her boss. She added borscht to the menu but kept the spaghetti and the name, and it became the after-work, after-Plast, after-church hangout… ‘You always felt if there was nothing else to do, you’d go to Orchie’s and find someone there that you knew.’”
Like Tolstoy said, etc., this is a very specific story about a family, but even if I didn’t relate to this exactly, this piece about Tad Friend’s relationship with his father is so specific and deep, it’s a great read.
Matt Levine’s takes on Elon Musk are the must-read takes on Elon Musk, and nothing delighted me more this than week than this stretch of this one:
Still I imagine that Twitter's bankers at Goldman Sachs will sit down with Musk's bankers at Morgan Stanley and Goldman will say “so uh where's the financing coming from” and Morgan Stanley will say “oh the financing is in this can” and hand Goldman a can and Goldman will open the can and a bunch of fake snakes will pop out. “AAAHHH,” Goldman will scream, and then they will chuckle and say “oh Elon, you got us again” and everyone will have a good laugh.
Lastly, this is from last year but I was looking up the Twins’ uniforms (don’t worry about it), and found this piece, which is the entire 2021 Twins’ starting rotation describing how and why they pick the uniforms before the games. Which,
a. If you didn’t know, the starting pitcher picks the uniform for the team generally.
b. Two people in the link above mention something I remember about having different uniforms for softball, which is that the fabrics sometimes matter more than the look if there’s one you really love or hate.
c. I honestly would read this from every team with multiple uniforms.
d. Like the players say, bring back the Twins’ cream pinstripes.
Light book commentary
Very light. But I truly have acquired a stack of novels to read in May and June, so stay tuned.
A note on all this
Thanks for subscribing. Hope you enjoy. The goal here is just to offer up some links you may have missed, and maybe the occasional commentary on something in politics or a book I may have read that you, the reader, might enjoy. If you have thoughts on any of this, hit me up at katherinemillernyc@gmail.com or just tweet at me.
